Math Academy

It is often said that Math is the gatekeeper to STEM fields.  This is because it is often a prerequisite to higher level courses and careers.

Math Academy Summer 2026 has been cancelled.
STAY TUNED!

UPDATE
March 16, 2026

*Reason for cancellation*

For the last two summers Math Academy has been tailored to helping students who may have traditionally struggled in math to build confidence. In light of recent reflection and insights, we have determined to forego camp this summer. One of our most glaring observations is that we can better serve students by having two camps --one for students who need more foundational skills development and the other for on-grade-level students wanting to accelerate their learning.

Over the next 6 months we anticipate developing the structure of both camps as well as recruiting support staff. The former camp will retain the name "Math Academy" while the new camp will be called "STEM Accelerator."  This camp will be tailored to students in grades 9-12 and will assist students who desire to go deeper in the practical application of math concepts in STEM. We hope to assist these students in achieving a trajectory to pursue advanced STEM degrees and become leaders in their schools and communities.  General requirements for admission to this camp can be seen below.

2027 DATES & TIMES

This is to be determined, but we typically start at the beginning of June and are considering multiple weeks in lieu of one week.

2027 ACTIVITIES

We have not finalized next year's activities, but students can expect a combination of rigourous instruction, engaging competitions, and field trips.

2027 REQUIREMENTS
(STEM Accelerator Camp)

Due to the stringent nature of the camp, the following requirements must be met for consideration.

  • Two recommendations from teachers (we will reach out to the teachers)

  • Completion of a pre-assessment conducted at a school site or online

  • Parent/guardian must attend a live in-person orientation first day of camp

GET NOTIFIED

We will likely open the application window January 2027.  At that juncture, we will provide further details about time, location, activities, and admission requirements.

RECAP of Math Academy (Year 2)

June 2 - 6, 2025

RECAP of Math Academy (Year 1)

June 3 - 7, 2024

The objective of our inaugural Math Academy was to use a combination of enrichment, project-based learning, and fun, social learning activities in order to provide an experience that built confidence and proficiency in math.  We worked with approximately 10 students ranging form 7th to10th grade over a five-day period for two hours per day.

The outcome exceeded our expectations.  Students, many of which expressed their discontent for math at the beginning of the camp, loved the experience and improved from pre-assessment to post-assessment.

Students improved an average of 54% from pre-assessment to post-assessment!

We hope to continue to develop this framework as a model that can be adopted by math classes and afterschool enrichment programs to accelerate learning.

Math Academy Program Components:

#1 Each week has a theme that is project-based and encompasses cross-cutting math concepts, creativity, and critical-thinking skills; students are placed on teams based on a pre-assessment, grade-level, and a team-based personality test (or discretion of faculty)

#2 Students are grouped for weekly instruction based primarily on grade-level and secondarily on individual pre-assessment scores; they are provided instruction based on the needs of the group and are pulled out for individual instruction as needed

#3 Students are equipped to self-regulate through developing a system of organization that utilizes a math notebook and a self-paced online module that helps them independently identify deficiencies, work towards proficiency, and measure progress.
